Culture named this album after some insane ramblings from Marcus Garvey about July 7th 1977 being the day of reckoning and apocalypse, which really at odds with the hopeful, upbeat riddums on this record. According to a mix of myth and fact this album became such a hit, and Garvey's premonition spread so far as a result, that everyone in the Carribean stayed in doors on that day in fear of what was coming. Everyone must have been blasting this album out of their homes, blunts in hand, waiting for Jah to come down to destroy the world.

So many crazy good hits on this album: 'Calling Rasta for I,' 'Natty Dread Taking Over,' and the title track, to name a few of the best. Oh, and Jah Lion did a 'cover' of the title track as well. Check it out, definitely the roots album of my summer.

I've been digging a lot of albums like this recently -- solo piano with a bit of minimalist effects, some pedal work, maybe some field recordings. On 'Polaroid Piano' the intimacy of the recording technique and playing style really becomes the album. You can hear the creak of the pedals and keys on whatever antique piano he's playing on, the fuzz from whatever mic setup he has. Then he overdubs very simple accompaniments, like toy xylophone, a few ringing guitar notes, fluttering from a bird's wings, which ties the pieces together and adds a strong sense of yearning and nostalgia. It's sort of like early Bibio, if Bibio was a pianist rather than a guitarist.
